Suzanne Guidera has an impressive expertise in PV. She thanks an encounter with an amazing boss, and values of authenticity and integrity for her successful career. She has a world of experience to share. She is kind, passionate, and driven. Read more here on what can lead to success and happiness in life and at work...

How did you begin your career in pharmacovigilance and operations?

After college, I chose to enter the pharmaceutical industry rather than pursue medical school. My first role, 28 years ago, was in clinical data management at a large pharmaceutical company. I was able to work really quickly with high quality and got a lot of positive feedback. Then I got the opportunity to join Merck in safety operations. From there on, it just stuck. I felt like it was that perfect blend of patient safety and a kind of tactical element that I was naturally good at.

What has been one of the most meaningful experiences in your career?

It was working with an exceptional leader and mentor who encouraged visionary thinking, gave me opportunities to broaden my experience, and helped me grow through new challenges. This relationship became one of the most cherished and impactful parts of my career.

What traits and values do you believe contributed to your success?

Be authentic with yourself. If you try to force yourself to fit in a path, you will not be successful. If you are true to yourself, things kind of fall into place and you can move forward positively. Integrity, resilience, adaptability, and continuous learning do matter. Mistakes are opportunities for learning, not failures. Build learning blocks, keep adapting to this changing world. Be vocal when something is not right.

What was your dream job when you were a kid?

As a child, I imagined working in marine research, inspired by the ocean, marine life, and programs like National Geographic and Jacques Cousteau. Over time, reality took over and my interests shifted. There is a cycle of life, and you always have to adapt.

What do you enjoy about consulting and working with JPCC?

I enjoy the diversity of consulting work, the opportunity to support different companies and people, and the ability to focus on meaningful work without some of the administrative burdens of a permanent role. I think the JPCC team is amazing. There's a unique leadership style here that really facilitates a collaborative environment, a culture of integrity and excellence that's important to me. And I think there's a tremendous amount of support for one another and just really, really nice people.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I enjoy a simple, outdoors-focused life in a rural area, including hiking with my dog, spending time near the shore, being outside, listening to music, and going to concerts. A simple life makes me happy!

What do you want to be remembered for?

I would say being a reliable, good friend for the people around me. Through good times and bad times, just being somebody that you could turn to and rely on for support when you needed it.
